Gray: D.C. bid for 2024 Olympics must include other cities

WASHINGTON – The Washington region failed in an attempt to get the 2012 Summer Olympics back in the 1990s that would have been the Washington-Baltimore Olympics. Now there is talk of trying for 2024.

But D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray says if anyone is seriously considering a bid for 2024 for this region it needs to be even wider.

“I think you’d have to go as far away as Philadelphia,” Gray says. “I think you’d have to go as far south as Richmond to do this effectively.”

He says the city is in an economic boon right now and he’d want to make sure any construction for the Olympics had a future use.

“The stadia that are build, the indoor arenas, the pools and all of those and then what happens to them in the aftermath,” he says.

Gray says he saw the venues from the 2008 Beijing Olympics when he was in China and they still have no designated uses now.
